November Lawn and Landscaping Tips

  1. Continue planting winter vegetables, such as beets, broccoli, cabbage, onions, radishes, and spinach.
  2. Continue planting herbs that like cooler weather, such as dill, sage, thyme, cilantro, fennel, and parsley.
  3. Plant cool-season flowers, such as carnations, pansies, petunias, and snapdragons.
  4. Now is a good time to plant ornamental trees and shrubs.
  5. Use dormant oil sprays to control scale on ornamental plants, trees, and shrubs.
  6. Protect citrus trees when freezing temperatures are predicted. Water a day prior and you may also use covers.
  7. Avoid any heavy pruning jobs, as they will encourage growth that may be damaged during the winter.
  8. Remember the birds. As you prune, make a small pile in the back of the yard for your feathered friends.
  9. Top-dress your perennial beds with a layer of compost.
  10. Refresh the mulch around your plants to help retain moisture and control weeds.
  11. Be sure to water your shrubs and trees throughout the winter, especially if the weather is dry.
  12. Remove the leaves from your lawn, as they can encourage disease.
  13. Plants are also beginning to take in and store nutrients for next year’s growth so now is the time to feed all your trees and shrubs Holly-tone/Plant-tone.
  14. Drain and cover any birdbath (unless heated) or fountain.
  15. Apply winterizer to your lawn.
  16. Fall is the BEST TIME OF YEAR to plant. Always use Bio-tone Starter Plus to reduce transplant shock and grow a stronger healthier root system.
  17. Water newly installed plants all fall until the ground freezes. Even after they drop their leaves. Check the soil and water accordingly until the ground freezes.
